The Clemency Board has granted clemency to 60 convicts during the first year of the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih administration.

While the Attorney General’s (AG) Office made the reveal via Twitter on Thursday, it added that the board has decided against pardoning or reducing the sentences of 49 convicts.

The statistics are from November 2018 to November 2019.

As per law, the attorney general is the president of the clemency board.

While the board has granted clemency to 60 convicts, President Solih had earlier reduced the prison sentences of 201 convicts.

As per Article 29 of the Clemency Act, the President has the discretion, on the President’s own initiative without the submission of an appeal, to grant pardons for persons sentenced prior to the commencement of the Constitution of 7 August 2008.
