Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, sentenced to five years imprisonment for money-laundering charges, has appealed his guilty verdict at the High Court.
President of the PNC, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, while speaking at the press conference held on Saturday by the coalition between Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC), stated that Yameen's legal team has appealed his sentence at the High Court and made two additional requests.
They include postponing Yameen's sentence and releasing the former president on bail.
Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday, after being found guilty of laundering USD one million through the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) via a private company SoF, during his presidency.
Additionally, the criminal court issued a fine of USD five million to be paid to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within six months of November 28th.
A five-judge bench unanimously came to a guilty verdict based on the evidence presented by the state, and witness statements.
