The bill seeks to form a "road safety council"

The first reading of the the amendment bill was held at Wednesday's sitting

The first reading of the amendments to the Land Transport Act was held at Wednesday’s parliament sitting.

The government-endorsed bill was sponsored by North-Kulhudhuffushi constituency MP, Yasir Abdul Latheef.

The aim of the bill is to increase road safety, introduce relevant laws to stop ongoing violations and to strengthen regulations.

It also seeks to introduce a road safety council.

This council will comprise of officials from six government institutions; from two ministries, Maldives Transport Authority, police, Attorney General’s Office and the Local Government Authority (LGA).

The council will also have the power to seeks experts’ opinion, when conducting its work.
