He said that the commission’s investigation proves that a group with extreme religious ideologies had planned the lawmaker’s murder

The President of the Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances, Husnu Suood, has said that there is “no room” to question the validity of the investigative report on the 2012 murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday, he said that the commission’s investigation proves that a group with extremist religious ideologies had planned the lawmaker’s murder, as well as that their reasoning for doing so and that the murder was contracted to a gang with links to this group.

Suood further said that the leaders of this hard-line religious group are identified through the statements of three witnesses, adding that this is also proven through the evidence gathered by the police and National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) “in the past seven years.”

Hence, Suood said that there is no room to say that the commission report is incomplete.

Earlier in the day, Home Minister Imran Abdulla -who was summoned for questioning for Tuesday’s parliament sitting- told the house that there is no scope to raise charges against anyone as based on the report.

The minister said that he has met with officials from the presidential commission, police and the Prosecutor General’s Office twice since the report was released.

Furthermore, Imran claimed that he had questioned these officials on whether anyone can be prosecuted at the first meeting, adding that he was informed that it cannot be disclosed at the time.

Parliament has on Tuesday passed the report done by its committee on national security services after reviewing the commission report, which calls for 11 recommendations including taking “immediate action” against those found to have been involved in Dr. Afrasheem’s murder or to have hidden facts (in the commission report).
