Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir has proposed to summon the Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Ahmed Mahloof, for questioning regarding the possible dissolution of Jamiyyath Salaf.
The lawmaker made the proposal at Wednesday’s hearing, amid the various allegations against the group including supporting and promoting extremist ideologies in the presidential commission’s investigative report on the 2012 murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali.
Jabir seeks to question the minister on whether any action has been taken against Salaf following the allegations, and if so to detail the measures.
While the Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances completed its investigation on one of the most controversial and brutal murders in the country’s history and forwarded the report to the President’s Office earlier this month, it has since been publicized as well as shared with the relevant institutions.
As such, the parliament had forwarded the report to the committee on national security and foreign relations for review. While a sub-committee was formed for further review, its report has since been submitted to the parliament floor.
The Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed, noted that the report describes Jamiyyath Salaf as one that promotes extremist ideologies.
