Minister of Education, Dr. Aishath Ali has revealed that the revised regulations for salaries of education workers were forwarded to the Pay Commission and it will be processed within the upcoming year.

Minister Aishath revealed this when inquired on when the revised regulations for teachers’ salaries will come into effect, by Dhaandhoo MP Yaugoob Abdulla, upon being presented to the People’s Majlis for questioning on Wednesday.

A lot of work is underway at the ministry to improve the salaries of teachers in line with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s campaign pledges, revealed Minister Aishath. Enhancing pay for teachers is one of Solih’s key pledges.

The regulations were revised “justly” and forwarded to the Pay Commission on 8 October.

“We are hoping teachers’ salaries will be improvised soon, although it is a very complex process as the Pay Commission handles increasing wages and such matters”
Minister Aishath

Further, Minister Aishath revealed that the process will take time as it is a major project and expressed her assurance that the revised regulations will come into effect, very soon as it is included in the incumbent’s pledges to the people. They are expected to bring a positive change to wages being provided to all civil service employees in education.

Stressing that the sector faces hindrances in finding hard-working and efficient teachers due to their pay being so less, the minister highlighted that this in turn leads to them hesitating to remain in the field.

Minister Aishath also announced plans to improve pay for overtime and provide additional allowances, in August. She however did not disclose details of the increments.
