Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has sent a condolence message to his counterpart in Pakistan, following the devastating fire on a train travelling through central Pakistan.

Noting that he was deeply saddened to learn of the fire that resulted in the loss of numerous lives and grievous injuries.

He further extended condolences and sympathies to the bereaved and affected families, on behalf of the Maldivian government and people.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Government and and the people of Pakistan in this tragic time”

He also wished a swift recovery to those who were injured in this horrific incident.

At least 73 people died in the fire on a train traveling through Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, on Thursday. More than 40 people were also injured in the blaze and a state of emergency was declared in nearby hospitals.

According to Pakistani officials, the fire erupted when a cooking gas stove exploded as passengers were preparing breakfast while the train was underway.

Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered an immediate inquiry into the train fire.
