MP Ghassan summoned for questioning regarding MMPRC scandal
He was summoned on Monday night

Guraidhoo constituency MP Ghassan Maumoon has been summoned for questioning regarding the biggest corruption scandal in the country’s history involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The son of ruling coalition leader, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was summoned to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) headquarters at 09:30pm on Monday.

Speaking to RaajjeMV outside of police HQ, MP Ghassan said that he believes he was summoned in an attempt to divert attention from the current situation in the country.

The Guraidhoo MP went on to give his assurance that he has not done anything that will hinder the people’s trust on him.

This comes at a time authorities have confirmed that 16 members of the 19th Parliament are implicated in the MMPRC case of graft, where millions were stolen from state coffers.

Among Gayoom’s four children, Ghassan is the closest to his half-uncle and former President Abdulla Yameen. He remained by Yameen’s side when his father left then ruling party, and even after his father and brother over politically motivated charges during the Yameen administration.

Ghassan won a seat in the 19th Parliament after beating Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Mohamed Naseer, leading the votes with 417 while Naseer fell behind with 287.
