The Minister of Communication, Science and Technology, Mohamed Maleeh Jamal has stated that the Prosecutor General (PG) Aishath Bisham is "an enemy of the constitution, calling for her removal from post.
While speaking on RaajjeTV's "Fala Surukhee" programme, the minister stated that many injustices have been carried out during Bisham's time in office and that she has been very irresponsible in fulfilling her duties so far.
The minister emphasized that Bisham must be removed from her post to ensure that justice is served. He highlighted that the citizens of the Maldives voted for a change of government to expel officials that use their influence to carry out unlawfulness.
A committee has made the decision to impeach Bisham. Before that, the state put forward a motion (to impeach). Therefore I believe the citizens voted for change to rectify the injustices carried out by officials like the PG. Even today, I call for the PG to be removed from her post, to ensure justice for the citizens provided by the constitution.Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamal![]()
In reference to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) graft, the minister expressed his concern over the implication of uninvolved individuals such as himself and predicted that this is an attempt to divert the investigation.
Additionally, he noted that the Prosecutor General is tasked with certain responsibilities under article 223 of the constitution.
Likewise, he highlighted that the PG has the authority to investigate any suspected wrongdoing, and can even criticize the police. Therefore, Bisham has failed to fulfill her duty as the MMPRC graft was ongoing during her tenure as PG. Adding that Bisham unfairly charged many political figures at the behest of the previous administration, Maleeh stated that the citizens of Maldives were witness to this and that these events cannot be erased from history.
In response to allegations of the involvement of state ministers and members of parliament in the MMPRC graft put forth by PG Bisham, the minister deemed it suspicious that the case has still not been taken to trial.
I can 100% guarantee that my name will not be in any database or on any document within the four walls of the PG office. I am absolutely certain. I call onto the PG to publicly declare any such evidence and not in any secret committee meeting. I don't believe this should be confidential as the MMPRC graft is not a small matter. It is a case of national interest. I believe that individuals who have zero involvement or are not mentioned in any report or investigation are being named to divert the investigation. The PG should not do such irresponsible things.Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamal![]()
According to the minister, important government officials such as the PG must provide adequate, evidence-based reasoning and consider the consequences before making statements. He responded to the allegation of his involvement in the MMPRC graft by emphasizing that he was actively speaking against the previous administration during that time.
PG Bisham had on Monday, during a closed-door meeting with the members of the public accounts' committee, revealed the identities of government officials and parliamentarians being investigated in the MMPRC graft.
