An emergency motion has been forwarded to the People’s Majlis to expose those implicated in major embezzlement cases such as the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC)’s massive case of graft as well as those linked to murder cases.

MP for west-Henveiru constituency, Hassan Latheef submitted the motion to parliament which was accepted with 42 votes in favor.

MP Latheef revealed that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was elected by the people during both the presidential election in 2018 and parliamentary elections in 2019 with hopes that the party, under its rule will thoroughly probe individuals implicated in theft from state coffers and take prompt actions against those who are found guilty of involvement in the unresolved cases of disappearances and murders in the country.

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham revealed that a few members of the parliament’s pubic accounts committee are being investigated in connection to the MMPRC embezzlement case. She made the assertion on Monday during a committee meeting.

MP Latheef stressed that the people are parched for justice and for authorities to discover everyone behind such crimes in order for them to be brought in front of justice. He added that the need to expose such individuals, is dire.

Two emergency motions were submitted to the parliament floor on Wednesday; one by MP Latheef and the second by MP for Nolhivaram constituency Mohamed Nasheed. MP Nasheed’s motion was not accepted at Wednesday’s sitting.
