Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has officially submitted his candidacy for a second term as main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s President.
MDP opened the opportunity for interested individuals to forward their candidacies and relevant documents to vie for the vacated seats of president and vice president, on 14 October.
By the time the deadline to submit forms expired on Saturday, Nasheed was the only candidate to have submitted applications to vie for party presidency and a majority of MDP members expressed support for the former President running for a second term.
The election to appoint the party’s president and vice president will be held on 22 November.
Taking to Twitter after submitting his candidacy, the Speaker of the 19th parliament expressed his gratitude to the party members who gave him their support through signatures.
Minister at the President’s Office, Mohamed Shifaz has applied for a second term as Vice President alongside north-Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam. Both members submitted their candidacies earlier.
According to the party’s regulations, its leader is incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
By 30 September, the party’s registry reached 53,590 members, MDP is renowned for their massive number of supporters.
