Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has urged sea travelers to be cautious over the bad weather.

Authorities have predicted that the current heavy rain and thunderstorms will likely get worse in the coming days.

MNDF stated that a yellow alert has been issued for the region between Haa Alif atoll and Gnaviyani atoll and a white alert has been issued for the region between Raa atoll and Addu City.

Highlighting the recent rise in reported incidents at sea, MNDF advised travelers to obtain the latest information on the weather and take the necessary safety precautions before travelling. MNDF also advised boat captains and crew to check the condition of the life jackets and other safety equipment as well as the pumps before disembarking.

MNDF also recommended that vessels not exceed the weight limit for luggage and to be extra cautious while traveling at night.

Travelers in distress are advised to immediately call the Coast Guard’s toll-free number 191.
