Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir has refused to give a statement to the police over the report he filed against former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
In the police report, MP Jabir claimed that he had given MVR 29 million to fund Gayoom’s presidential campaign.
While MP Jabir had gone to the police headquarters on Monday night, he told RaajjeMV that he refused to give the statement after seeing that Gayoom was not there, adding that he will only give his statement in the presence of the former president.
MP Jabir earlier said that Gayoom had taken money from him at various times for Gayoom’s campaign after claiming that it was to “bring democracy back to Maldives,” and that he had filed the police report after failing to retrieve the money.
The police initially refused to investigate due to lack of evidence, but MP Jabir has said that he re-submitted the report with 12 pieces of evidence earlier this month.
Gayoom’s party Maldives Reform Movement has denied MP Jabir’s claim.
