Man arrested and remanded for mocking Islam

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has remanded a man arrested for mocking Islam, by 15 days.

The arrest was made under a court order in Thinadhoo, Gaaf Dhaal atoll on Tuesday, and the man was remanded on Wednesday.

Police revealed that the arrest was made as the man has been targeting mockery towards Islam through social media posts.

He is alleged to have “begun work against the religion”.

MPS is also investigating threats against the man.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had in January 2019, assembled a committee to bring a solution to the mounting issue of religious mockery and criticism.

The committee is tasked with holding discussions regarding the issue with relevant authorities and implementing immediate action as well as forming long-term strategies to prevent religious criticism. Other responsibilities include taking action against those who commit crimes such as deliberate destruction of property and endangering lives or people in the name of protecting religion.
