The presidential commission stated that there was no legal ground to arrest the two officers implicated in the kidnapping and murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan, stated the police service.
In a press release on Friday, the police service stated that the presidential commission on deaths and disappearances and the attorney general have urged them to take action against the officers implicated in Rilwan’s case.
The police service also confirmed that the AG has requested an arrest order for the officers, citing that allowing them to be free might hinder the investigation.
The police also stated that they have been advised to investigate MNDF Colonel Abdul Rauf and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb over their involvement in the case.
The police stated that they have asked for the presidential commission’s draft report on the case and informed the AG that the two officers had already been investigated and that they were suspended on September 5, adding that they are now working to submit their cases to the police disciplinary board.
In the press release, the police stated that they are looking into the operations conducted regarding Rilwan’s case and investigating officer Fayaz Ismail over the inconsistent statement he gave to the presidential commission.
It also stated that the commission has not found any evidence to charge any police officer and so there was no legal ground to make any arrests, adding that the commission advised the police service to investigate the implicated officers and take administrative action.
The police service stated that it will fully cooperate with the police service and is willing to obey any instruction written in the commission’s draft report.
