Hassan Luthufee, the former head of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), has sent a letter to the Criminal Court, stating that he will not give testimony against former President Abdulla Yameen.

Criminal Court Chief Judge Ahmed Hailam confirmed that he received the letter, at Monday’s hearing on the case of Aishath Azima Shakoor, the former legal affairs minister at the President’s Office.

In the letter, Luthufee said that the current environment is not conducive to fairness and justice and so he will not be giving a court testimony due to the threats to his life.

The state proposed Luthufee as a witness for the two charges against Azima Shakoor. Judge Hailam asked the state prosecutors on how to proceed, and in response, they said that the police service has a recording of its interview with Luthufee on Yameen’s money laundering investigation and that he had not raised any of these issues in the interview. The state asked the court to make a decision after listening to the recording.

The state’s attorney also said that Luthufee was not forced into an interview with the police.

Luthufee resigned as ACC president on June 26, shortly after the parliament’s committee on independent institutions passed to remove him.

Prior to the resignation, Luthufee had been accepting full salary despite being absent from work since February. He is currently in Malaysia.
