Parliament has approved the request to increase the state budget by MVR 1.7 billion.
The finance ministry’s request was approved with 71 votes in favor, after it was reviewed by the budget evaluation committee.
The parliament passed a state budget of MVR 30.2 billion for this year, which will now be increased to MVR 32 billion.
The government has used MVR 15.5 billion from the state budget so far, and received MVR 14.5 billion in income.
The finance minister and senior officials of Maldives Monetary Authority and Auditor General’s office were summoned to the budget evaluation committee during the evaluation.
Finance Minister Ahmed Ameer said the main purpose for increasing the state budget is to increase funding for this year’s government projects and to fulfill President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s pledges.
The budget increase includes MVR 717 million the Maldives government received in foreign aid, of which MVR 648 million is bilateral aid and MVR 69 million is assistance for government projects.
