Taxi permits are to be revoked for drivers whose fines exceed a certain amount for charging more than the set fare.
Transport Authority stated that it has received many complaints of taxi drivers charging more than the set fare.
The Authority stated that the Land Transport Act allows it to revoke the taxi permit of any driver who has been fined more than three times in one year for charging more for fares.
The Transport Authority’s fares are: MVR 25 to drive within Male’ or Hulhumale’, MVR 60 to drive to and from Male’ and Hulhule’, MVR 60 to drive to and from Hulhule’ and Hulhumale’, and MVR 75 to drive to and from Male’ and Hulhumale’.
The Driver’s Association has stated that the fares will not provide taxi drivers with a sustainable income since they have to incur costs for their work.
