The Presidential Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances is seeking charges against those found negligent in the untimely death of detainee Hussain Zareer.
While this is the first case concluded by the commission, it has since been forwarded to the police.
Hussain Zareer, 28, died while receiving medical care at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in November 2016.
He was the third detainee to have died while awaiting trial that year; 57-year-old Adam Ali died in September while 55-year-old Moosa Naeem died in August.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih established the Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances on November 17, the same day that he took oath of office.
The commission is investigating 25 cases, including high-profile cases such as the death of lawmaker Dr. Afrasheem Ali (2012) and blogger Yameen Rasheed (2017), as well as the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan (2014).
Members of the commissioner were in Fuvahmulah City earlier this year, to investigate the disappearance of Mohamed Shafeeu; missing since July 2017.
A motion granting authority to the presidential commissions was passed by parliament in June, and President Solih ratified it on June 24.
