Abdulla Maaniu Hussain has been elected the lawyers’ representative in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Maaniu received the highest votes out of the five candidates at Saturday’s election.
Maaniu won with 199 votes with Ali Rasheed receiving the second highest with 124 votes.
Former Information Commissioner Jamal Abubakur received 37 votes while Mariyam Haneefa, the only female candidate, received 27 votes. Ahmed Rasheed came in last with nine votes.
While 1,487 lawyers registered to vote in the election, only 404 cast their ballots.
The ballot boxes were placed in Male’ and Addu City.
JSC’s seat reserved for the lawyers’ representative had been occupied by Latheefa Gasim, but she was dismissed after the Legal Profession Act was ratified.
