Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)’s Malé Area Coast Guard Squadron has begun working to refloat a barge sinking off of Feydhoofinolhu island in Kaafu atoll.

MNDF’s CG Maritime Rescue Coordination Center received the report of the incident a little past 10am on Saturday and immediately dispatched a team of divers from their CG Squadron to the region.

“Marine Power 2318” began sinking after an issue with the vessel’s ballast tank and the owner is to have cited that the barge set off from Thoothukudi in the southern Tamil Nadu state to Maldives.

In their efforts to refloat the vessel, CG officers are also working to find if the vessel has any craters or other damages.

10 foreigners were on board the barge at the time the ballast tank broke down and there was no cargo onboard at the time.

MNDF reported no injuries in the incident.
