The People’s Majlis is to summon Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid for questioning next week.

While FM Shahid is to be summoned to Wednesday’s sitting and MP for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir sought to present him to the People’s Majlis on 2 June.

Parliament failed to summon FM Shahid within the 14-day notice as he was out of the country.

During a press conference on Thursday, Parliament Secretary General Fathmath Niusha revealed that the questioning has been put on Wednesday’s agenda.

In a letter addressed to Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, MP Jabir wrote that FM Shahid must be questioned regarding the relations between Maldives and Qatar and whether it is mentioned in the country’s foreign policy to strengthen bonds with Qatar and how far the ties have gone. He also sought to question whether the government plan to strengthen ties with Qatar in the future.

This came at a time the Foreign Minister announced that they have begun discussions to strengthen relations between Qatar and Maldives.

Parliament has been summoning several ministers for questioning and inquiries on progress throughout its sittings. Minister of Housing and Urban Development Athifa Shakoor was summoned on Monday this week, where she was questioned by MP for Vilufushi constituency.
