There seems to be a confusion in the number of officers that took part in the operation where a civilian was beaten up.

This was released during a meeting of the parliament’s committee on human rights and gender, where they questioned officials of the institutions that are investigating the case.

The officers in the operation, held on July 5, manhandled the suspects, and a video of this was immediately uploaded on social media.

Police have since revealed details of the operation, including that a 36-year-old Bangladeshi expatriate was arrested in the raid, over drug possession, and that a local man, 28, had attempted to flee after jumping out through a window; he was arrested on the road.

Police have since revealed that the case is being investigated by all relevant institutions, and that seven officers have been suspended.

Commissioner Mohamed Hameed himself had submitted the names of the officers to the institutions.

However, at Tuesday night’s meeting, police revealed that a total of eight officers had taken part in the operation, adding that seven were suspended for actively taking part in the unlawful act.

Assistant Police Commissioner Abdulla Ahmed emphasized that they decided not to take action against the eighth officer, as that there is no evidence that he was involved.

However, at Tuesday night’s meeting, National Integrity Commission (NIC) member Ahmed Hameed said that nine officers had taken part in the operation according to the CCTV footage obtained from the scene of the Bangladeshi man’s arrest. He added that the commission has taken statements from all nine officers.

In addition, the assistant commissioner stated that man that had attempted to flee had sustained injuries due to a fall, adding that the Bangladeshi was not seriously hurt.

While the officer that managed to evade suspension is to have arrested the second suspect, NIC noted that they have yet to be provided video footage from the area.

Police is to have confiscated 461 grams of narcotics in the operation.
