The police service has begun investigating a case of officers "manhandling a suspect."

Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed announced this on Friday, calling it "unacceptable." The officers have been suspended.

In a tweet on Friday night, Commissioner Hameed also said that the Human Rights Commission and National Integrity Commission are doing their independent investigation, and that the details of the officers have been shared with these commissions.

He said that the police service’s executive team will fully support the investigations and will not tolerate torture.

The Commissioner has since met with these officers.

A video is circulating on social media of officers of the Drug Enforcement Department assaulting residents of a house, during a court-ordered search operation.

After the video was publicized, the officers went to the house next door to threaten the residents, who the officers believe to have recorded the incident.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s secretary general Anas Abdul Sattar Anas, who lives in the house, said that the officers had entered after claiming that it was part of a police operation and had gone floor by floor checking the residents’ phones to delete the video.
