Muavviz Rasheed has been elected as the President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
He was elected through a vote held between the current members of the commission; all voted in favor of his election to the post.
He was previously the vice president.
Muavviz’s appointment comes after the resignation of Abdulla Luthufee. While Luthufee had been absent from work for five months prior to his resignation, Muavviz had been the acting head.
Luthufee is to have first sent in his resignation to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in June, but was asked to resend it via a letter earlier this week.
His resignation was following parliament’s committee on independent institutions’ decision to dismiss him for accepting monthly salary despite being absent from work.
Luthufee has been accused of helping former President Abdulla Yameen escape his money laundering charge by trying to keep Yameen’s bank account from being frozen and allow the one million US dollars Yameen received from MMPRC to be transferred to an escrow account during ACC’s investigation.
The police service has confirmed that it is investigating a money laundering case involving Luthufee.
