Parliament speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has met with Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente of Rwanda.

The former president is currently in the central and eastern African nation to attend the annual Rwanda-based Kigali Global Dialogue, where he also delivered a keynote address.

At the meeting held on Wednesday, both parties discussed “on strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors.” This includes agriculture, trade and education.

In a tweet posted after, Nasheed stated that both countries agree that there is “a lot to learn from each other,” adding that “it would be a delight to work with the government and people of Rwanda.”

In addition, the former president also met with Rwanda’s foreign minister Dr. Richard Sezibera on the sidelines of the Kigali Global Dialogue.

The minister assured Rwanda’s support for Maldives to return to the Commonwealth, and “to find a process to fast track the re-entry.”

Furthermore, Nasheed visited radio station ‘Voice of Africa’, who expressed that it was a “privilege” to have him.

The former president also praised the Rwanda’s progress since the genocide against the Tutsi, which took place between 7 April and 15 July 1994 during the Rwandan Civil War.

“Tomorrow, Rwanda marks the 25th anniversary of Liberation day, when the genocide against the Tutsi was stopped by the exceptional leadership of my friend Paul Kagame. Since then, the country has experienced astonishing prosperity & progress”
