Manafaru changes decision to fire employees, following visit by tourism minister

The resort management’s decision to dismiss a large number of employees was met with immense criticism

JA Manafaru Maldives has changed its decision to layoff a number of local employees.

Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM) announced this via Facebook on Sunday night, thanking Tourism Minister Ali Waheed’s “efforts to bring the struggle to an end.”

The resort management’s decision to dismiss a large number of employees was met with immense criticism.

While the ministry was made aware of the situation via social media, the tourism minister traveled to the island in northernmost Haa Alifu atoll to investigate the matter on Sunday.

According to media reports, the resort was to fire a number of employees after restructuring, due to a poor financial situation. This led to a hunger strike, with two reportedly being admitted at the island clinic due to fatigue.

The tourism ministry is currently conducting an inspection of guesthouses and resorts across the country, and had by mid-June inspected a total of seven atolls.

The minister said that the inspection is expected to conclude by September this year.
