Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said that Abdulla Luthufee, the mastermind of the 1988 coup, will be returned to Maldives.
The foreign ministry and the police service have stated that they are facing legal obstacles in returning Luthufee, who is currently at the Maldives embassy in Colombo.
At a press conference on Sunday, Nasheed said that he has been looking into the case and that Maldives has rarely been unable to make extraditions.
Highlighting that Luthufee’s case is of public concern, Nasheed assured that the government will do whatever it takes to return him.
He also said that the parliament will be questioning the Home Minister regarding Luthufee’s case.
Luthufee, who was given a life sentence for leading the coup, fled Maldives in 2010 after being given permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.
While an Interpol red notice was issued for his capture, he turned himself in at the Maldivian Embassy in Colombo on May 1.
