Supreme Court has ordered authorities to seize the passport of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
While three verdicts against Adeeb were overturned in May, the state had appealed high court’s decision to overturn his eight-year embezzlement conviction earlier in June.
The top court issued a stay order in the case on Monday, saying that it has accepted the state’s case and ordering the Maldives Immigration to withhold Adeeb’s passport until a court reaches a decision.
High Court cited an order issued by the Supreme Court in February 2018, in overturning the conviction.
While the Supreme Court had ordered the seizure of the former VP’s passport, he is currently in India after being granting medical leave.
The decision to grant him medical leave was received with criticism, and authorities assured that he will “not be given the opportunity to flee.”
He is accompanied by seven officers.
