America endorses efforts to strengthen institutions and deliver justice and rule of law to the Maldivian people, says Ambassador Alaina Teplitz.
She said this at a meeting held with the press on Wednesday, to share information regarding the Maldives Partnership Forum 2019.
At the meeting, the ambassador said that America does not have an opinion or stand “on the facts in the case" between the Supreme Court and the Judicial Service Commission, but emphasized on the importance of strengthening institutions.
Noting that there are three branches in a democracy, she said that having “an independent, capable and competent judiciary is essential,” as well to have a body to adjudicate the rule of law.
Teplitz also highlighted that having confidence in these institutions is essential.
She also spoke regarding the two agreements signed during the two-day partnership forum; to formalize the American Centre in the capital and to assess USD eight million to the Development Objective Grant Agreement.
The ambassador further said that America wants ties with Maldives to “stay strong” but that it does not want the connectivity to be between just the government “but also the people.”
