Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi has asked for “open” investigations in the cases against him.

While a Judicial Service Commission (JSC) investigative committee has launched probes into two cases against him, Didi was summoned to the committee late Monday night.

He arrived at the meeting with his legal team -comprising of three lawyers- and was asked to give statements in both cases.

Speaking to the media afterwards, Didi’s defence lawyer Adam Asif said that his client has asked to make the investigations as open as possible.

Asif said that this is to ensure the people “his integrity.”

Further noting that the justice will “fully cooperate” in the investigation, the lawyer said that JSC will also be informed of any plans to leave the country.

Regarding the matter, JSC’s director Hassan Zaheen stated that the investigations can only be made public "if the Commission decides so."

Hence, he said that the investigative committee decided to forward the matter to the Commission, who is to deliberate on it.

Zaheen added that their decision “will be publicized.”

The Judicial Service Commission held its 35th meeting on Monday, where it passed to form a committee to investigate the cases against Didi.

However, three members of the Commission opted to not be involved with the committee. These members are; president Abdulla Arif, as well as members Abdul Hannan Ahmed and Latheef Qasim.

JSC has revealed that it is investigating two cases against the top court justice. They are;

  • 1. A disciplinary case against him, after being informed of a police investigation against him
  • 2. Continuing to work despite a suspension

The Commission had, last week, suspended Didi over a bribery case filed by parliament speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed.

While Supreme Court has since issued a stay order in the case, JSC decided to uphold its initial decision. The court has since issued an order saying that any decision against its first order “is invalid.”
