The judicial reform work “cannot be stopped,” says Thulhaadhoo constituency MP and Judicial Service Commission (JSC) member Hisaan Hussain.

She said this via Twitter, following the parliament judiciary committee’s decision to uphold JSC’s decision to suspend Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi; MP Hisaan, who is a member of the committee as well, had recused herself from the committee due to conflict of interest.

Hisaan said that the mandate given to the government and People’s Majlis, by the people, is “very clear.”

“Judicial reform will not stop, and cannot be stopped. The work will move ahead in the same direction,”

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s ambitious ‘Agenda 19’ proposes various changes to reform the country’s judiciary, including to restrict the Supreme Court’s authority.

There has been a power fight between JSC and the Supreme Court, following Didi’s suspension. JSC members were summoned to the parliament’s judiciary committee on Thursday, where they claimed they are unable to work effectively due to the Supreme Court ‘meddling' in cases.

MDP leader and current parliament speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed said that judicial reform will be “one of the most important work carried out under MDP’s parliamentary policy.”

MDP has 65 representatives, out of 87, in parliament.
