AG requests to narrow Supreme Court powers

Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath has requested the parliament to narrow the Supreme Court’s powers to prevent it from obstructing the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

This comes after the Supreme Court ordered the JSC to reverse its recent decision to suspend Justice Abdulla Didi, which the JSC ignored.

Speaking at a parliamentary committee meeting where JSC members were present, Riffath requested that they begin making changes to the relevant authorities to allow JSC to implement its decisions without interference from the Supreme Court.

AG Riffath also requested the parliament to make legal changes to prevent the court from taking it upon itself to begin contempt of court cases and to stop the court from nullifying subsections of bills passed by parliament.

Riffath also said that the standards and qualifications of court judges have not been well monitored, leading the public to distrust the judiciary.

He also said that allegations against the judges have to investigated as soon as possible.
