Parliament accepts presidential commissions bill

It was accepted after three days of deliberations
The two commissions are; Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances and Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery

Parliament has on Wednesday accepted a bill giving authority to the two commissions established by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The two commissions are; Commission on Murders and Enforced Disappearances and Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery.

The bill was proposed by Alifushi constituency MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain earlier this week.

It was accepted after three days of deliberations, with a number of lawmakers speaking in its favor.

It was accepted to parliament with the vote of 79 MPs, out of the 40 required. While one lawmaker had abstained from the vote, there were no votes against.

Following the vote, the parliament speaker said that the general purpose committee will decide on which committee will review the bill. However, he recommended the judiciary committee.

President Solih has established both commissions on November 17, the same day he took oath of office.

MP Rasheed had proposed the bill granting authority to the commissions to the 18 parliament as well. Despite being submitted a number of times; it had failed to take a vote on the matter by the time the tenure ended in April.
