Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two projects during his visit to the Maldives.

In a press briefing on Thursday, Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said that PM Modi will be inaugurating the projects with Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The Foreign Secretary said PM Modi will be inaugurating the project to establish a Composite Training Center for the Maldives National Defence Force and the Coastal Surveillance Radar System to monitor and protect Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone.

In the press briefing, Gokhal highlighted that India has pledged USD 200 million in budgetary support to the Maldives government and that USD 50 million of it is for cash support for budgetary purposes.

During his visit, PM Modi will also sign agreements to train civil servants and the two countries will also be finalizing the currency swap agreement under SAARC.

Gokhal said the main purpose of PM Modi’s visit is to further develop the friendly relations with the neighboring countries.

Maldives will be starting 36 projects to build water supply and sewerage systems in the islands this year, to be financed with the USD 800 million credit facility taken from India’s EXIM bank. The credit facility agreement was signed by Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer in March.

Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale also said that India’s relationship with Maldives has been further enhanced with the new administration of President Solih.
