One of the two drug suspects, arrested for a third time, has been remanded by 10 days.
They, a 25-year-old man and 52-year-old woman, were arrested at around 3:10am on Tuesday- with three kilograms of drugs- in a raid conducted at a house in the capital’s suburban district Hulhumalé.
However, Criminal Court released them at a remand hearing, citing incomplete raid and arrests orders.
They were rearrested early Wednesday morning, but were released by the Hulhumalé Magistrate Court- who issued both arrest orders- later in the day.
According to the court, police had violated Article 8 (a) of the Criminal Procedure Act by not sending the investigating officer assigned to the case to the remand hearing.
Police arrested them for a third time on Wednesday night, and the man has since been remanded by 10 days.
The woman, his mother, was released based on her health condition, said the police.
At Thursday’s remand hearing, he confessed that the substances found at their residence belonged to him and that his mother had no knowledge of it.
Police continue to investigate the case.
While the Criminal Court, through a statement on Wednesday, questioned police's actions in the case, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said that they will "review this particular case, and if necessary rectify any errors on our part."
He assured the police's commitment to combat serious drug crimes, and said that it will "exercise all its powers to pursue drug trafficking offenders in compliance with procedural law. "
