The parliament is to share details of its work with the media, twice a week.

At a press conference on Wednesday, secretary-general Fathimath Niusha said that the decision was made by the newly elected speaker and deputy.

The parliament’s secretary general said that it will also be handling preparations for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, as the parliament has passed to accept his request to deliver an address at the People’s Majlis.

She said a date for this will be announced later.

The 87-member parliament was sworn in on Tuesday night, and main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MPD) leader former President Mohamed Nasheed was elected as its speaker at the first sitting of the second session. He received 67 votes in his favor. North-Galolhu constituency MP Eva Abdulla was appointed as the deputy, with 76 votes.

During his inaugural address, Speaker Nasheed emphasized that the 19th parliament will be different and that everything will be handled with transparency.
