People’s Majlis has on Wednesday passed to appoint Thulhaadhoo constituency MP Hisaan Hussain as parliamentary member to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

81 members voted in favor of passing the bill, submitted by MP Ibrahim Shareef and backed by MP Ilyas Labeeb.

Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group forwarded MP Hisaan’s name for membership at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday morning.

The prominent lawyer who has a Masters in the legal sector first worked at the Attorney General’s office. In 2007 she left the AG office and worked at her own law firm until 2008 when MDP’s first government was inaugurated. She was then appointed as Legal Affairs Minister at the President’s Office.

Hisaan also took on legal cases of many politicians, some of whom include current Parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed, as well as Maamigili MP and ruling coalition leader Qasim Ibrahim.

The lawyer also took on cases of former Commissioner of Police and Thimarafushi MP Abdulla Riyaz, Minister at the President’s Office, Mohamed Shifaz as well as former Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed.

On Tuesday night, Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has also been appointed as member at the commission shortly after he had been elected as speaker at the inaugural parliament sitting.

The JSC comprises of the Parliament Speaker, a member elected through the Parliament, a Supreme Court judge, Attorney General, a lower court judge, a judge from the High Court, the President of the Civil Service Commission, a member nominated by the President, a general member nominated by the Majlis as well as a lawyer.

Former MP for Dhiggaru constituency, Ahmed Faris Maumoon had been the JSC member during the 18th Parliament.
