The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that they have completed draining the flood water in Thaa atoll followed by unceasing heavy showers over the atoll on Monday.

Continuous rain showers had prevailed over Thaa atoll from 8am on Monday and the rain showers are predicted to continue over the atoll on Tuesday as well.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, NDMA’s Chief Executive Hisaan Hassan revealed that they had completed draining the storm water from islands by 3am on Tuesday, with the help of officers from the Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), island residents and the island’s local council.

Hisaan further revealed that they are now conducting damage assessments in households with the help of the island council and that the authority will be monitoring the damages once the assessment reports are received.

In addition, Hisaan stressed that although they haven’t had to vacate any households yet, the furniture and properties of some households have been reportedly damaged.

NDMA on Monday cautioned the public to be cautious of the turbulent weather conditions that began prevailing over different regions of the country with the beginning of the southwest monsoon which begins at the end of May every year.

The MET department earlier predicted heavy rain showers and thunderstorms to prevail over almost the entirety of the country during late hours.
