Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen has been appointed Vice-Chairman of Committee B at the 72nd World Health Assembly (WHA).

The WHA is the decision-making body of the World Health Organization and is held annually in Geneva, Switzerland.

The assembly’s functions are to determine the policies of the Organization, appoint the Director-General, supervise financial policies, and review and approve the proposed programme budget.

During his trip to Geneva, Health Minister Ameen has been meeting with senior officials of foreign countries and discussing support and collaboration for the development of the health sector.

He has also delivered his plenary statement at WHA, under the title “Universal health coverage: leaving no-one behind”.

The Maldives delegation has also delivered a statement on behalf of 11 countries in the region, calling for country level capacity building, reduction in price of drugs and diagnostics to help the countries place 18 million people on treatment by 2022.

Maldives expresses great concern at WHA over continuing conflicts in Gaza Strip, the restrictions in sending medical supplies, and the continuation of barriers to health care access for Palestinian patients.

Maldives has co-sponsored and voted in favor of the WHA decision to work towards strengthening health conditions of Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan.
