Foreign Minister discusses current situation with Sri Lankan counterpart
 
Shahid requested that Sri Lanka safeguard Maldivian residents and travelers
 
They discussed a recent statement by the country’s army chief claiming that Maldivians had traveled to Syria via Sri Lanka

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has called his counterpart in Sri Lanka to discuss the current situation in the country.

During the call, Minister Shahid and Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana discussed a recent statement by the country’s army chief claiming that Maldivians had traveled to Syria via Sri Lanka.

They discussed the difficulties Maldivian residents may face during this time of crisis in Sri Lanka and Minister Shahid requested that Sri Lanka safeguard Maldivian residents and travelers.

During their talk, the Sri Lankan Minister expressed his appreciation for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sending a delegate to Sri Lanka on the day of the April 21 terror attacks and he thanked Minister Shahid for being the first senior official of a foreign government to visit Sri Lanka after the attacks.

He also assured that the Sri Lankan government will work to safeguard its Maldivian residents.

Minister Shahid in turn said that the Maldivian government will work with all neighboring countries to make the Indian ocean safe from terrorism.
