Police displays officer service numbers on uniforms

"It is one small, but an effective measure"

This was done in order to make officers more accountable and responsible

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has begun displaying the service numbers of officers, on their uniforms.

The recent introduction was revealed via Twitter by Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed, who said that this is "a small but effective measure for officer accountability."

Commissioner Hameed had attached a picture of an officer in uniform with his name and service number displayed for the people to see.

While the service number is “unique” to each individual officer, Hameed went on to write that officer identity "is essential to accountable and responsible policing."

It was a notable issue during the previous administration that officers did not have their names pinned to their uniforms when they are dispatched to control street protests and gatherings.

This step is believed to be appreciated by the public as some officers have been unrecognized while they use unnecessary force and brutality while handling protesters.
