Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof has responded to criticism that “all the ministry is doing is building football stadiums.”

Mahloof, who has traveled to about 100 islands since his appointment in November last year, said that this government “listens to the people when making pledges.”

“What we saw in the past is those at the ministry deciding on the development needs of an island, whether to conduct an awareness programme or a training, stadium or court,” highlighted the sports minister.

Mahloof added that the current government believes in holding discussions with atoll and island councils, as well as the youth, regarding an island’s development needs.

While the sports minister has met with a number of councils, the minister said that there have been concerns over the unfinished football grounds started by the previous administration, as well as the broken-down youth centers in various islands.

“All our work is conducted after discussions with the council and youth, and as per their requests,” he added.

The ministry is to begin work to build football stadiums in 25 islands this year.

Further highlighting the government’s commitment to developing sports in the country, Minister Mahloof said that they will be working to hold international tournaments in the country. The new football grounds are to have the facilities to do so.

In addition, Mahloof revealed that the work to empower the youth and community will also be decided after discussions with the councils and the youth.
