Total of four parties provided audit reports by deadline: ECM
Parties may face fines between MVR 20,000 and 50,000 if they do not provide the reports

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed that Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) is the only other party that provided the party’s audit report and annual report for 2018 after the deadline approached.

ECM had previously announced that they will be taking action against the political parties that do not submit their annual reports and audit reports for 2018, by 9 May.

By 9 May, ECM revealed that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) were the parties that had submitted said reports. PPM had submitted the reports after the deadline.

According to the general political parties act, the final deadline to submit annual and audit reports was 1pm, Thursday.

ECM revealed that a total of four political parties had provided said reports by then.

The general political parties act also states that political parties must be provided their funds if their registry has 10,000 members. However, they will only be provided funds once they provide their annual and audit reports to the ECM and if it is clear through the annual report that the party has put in its best efforts to reach its goals by year-end.

The commission’s spokesperson Ahmed Akram stated that the commission will be taking action against all political parties that don’t follow through. As such, the law states that parties that do not follow through will be fined between MVR 20,000 and 50,000.
