March to be held on Labour Day
 
The march will begin at Rasfannu Beach on Wednesday afternoon

A march is to be held in capital Male’ City to celebrate Labour Day on May 1.

Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM)’s Secretary General Mauroof Zakir said that the march will be held on the capital city’s main road, Majeedhee Magu, and urged all workers to join them.

Mauroof said that TEAM, the Teacher’s Association, workers in the health sector, fishermen, and the Port Worker’s Union are set to join the march.

He said that the current highest priority for workers is a minimum wage and that he was pleased that this has been included in the main ruling party’s parliamentary agenda.

TEAM stated that the march will begin at Rasfannu Beach, move along the main road and end at Artificial Beach. TEAM stated that the purpose of the march is to raise concerns of all workers.

Labour Day, International Worker’s Day, or May Day is a celebration of labourers and the working classes.

President Mohamed Nasheed declared Labour Day a public holiday in the Maldives in 2011.
