Supreme Court drafts roadmap for judicial reform

Judicial reform is included in the government manifesto and main ruling party

The roadmap is to be unveiled at a ceremony on Wednesday night

The Supreme Court has drafted a five-year roadmap to reform the judiciary and guarantee the independence of the courts.

The roadmap was drafted with ideas taken from the Judicial Conference on Judicial Independence and Reform held in February.

The Department of Judicial Administration (DJA) stated that the Supreme Court will be hosting a special ceremony at the Islamic Center on Wednesday night to unveil the roadmap. DJA stated that ministers will be in attendance and that Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi will be giving a speech.

This comes at a time when President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been calling for drastic changes to the judiciary. Judicial reform is also included in his manifesto and in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s agenda for the 19th parliament.

MDP’s parliamentary agenda proposes to reduce the powers of the Supreme Court, reform the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), and re-evaluate all judges.
