President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has joined Tuesday’s march to mark the two-year anniversary of blogger Yameen Rasheed’s brutal murder.

The friends and families of Yameen and missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan joined the march held in capital city Male’ on Tuesday evening.

Yameen, one of the most popular bloggers in the country, was murdered at the stairwell of his home in capital city Male’ in April 2017.

Authorities arrested six suspects and held the trial behind closed door but have so far refused to provide any information on the case.

Due to the failure of the previous administration, President Solih established a special commission to investigate Yameen’s death and a number of other major cases of murder and disappearance.

The commission’s work is currently at a standstill after a government-proposed bill to grant statutory authority to the commission was stalled in parliament.

Head of the commission Husnu Suood has recently said that they have identified those behind a number of deaths and their motives but that the commission is unable to file any charges due to the lack of statutory authority.
