Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s parliamentary group leader Eva Abdulla has voiced the party’s opposition to the recently proposed bills to provide additional benefits to former MPs.
The amendment bills to the Parliamentary Privileges Act propose to give former MPs lifetime pay and benefits.
The three bills were proposed by Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed and Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa, who have failed their re-election bids.
In a tweet on Monday, MP Eva Abdulla said the main ruling party will impose a ‘red’ whipline to vote against the bills.

The amendments propose to provide 30% percent of the parliamentarian’s salary to one-term MPs and 45% to MPs who have served two terms.
Other benefits for former MPs include providing diplomatic passports to them and their spouses, health insurance for their spouses and children, and airport VIP services.
