Maldives Police Service has searched two islands in connection to reports they received regarding missing girl Aminath Shima Nafiz.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Fairoosh revealed that they had searched the islands after receiving reports that Shima's body had been burned.
As such, they had searched two uninhabited islands in Gaaf Alif atoll, however, officers have thus far found no leads in the missing girl case.
“We are working to verify the reports we’ve got about Shima. We conducted a dive on 28th March in Laamu region after information received through phone records and antennas,” said Fairoosh.
In addition, the Assistant Commissioner added that they have thus far searched the entirety of Laamu atoll in connection the case, to no avail.
While 17 islands have been searched thus far, police revealed that they had taken statements from 46 individuals.
On February 22, Shima boarded a flight from Male’ to Fonadhoo and then attempted to travel to Maamendhoo on a dinghy being steered by a man, who after the dinghy overturned, placed her on top of it and swam to a nearby resort. Shima has been missing since.
