Male' roads are still underdeveloped: Mayor

Mayor Shifa said that the Male’ city council needs to restructure the roads

The roads in capital city Male’ are still underdeveloped, says Mayor Shifa Mohamed.

She said this at a press conference held by the Disaster Management Authority and the Male’ city council on Sunday, after heavy rain caused flooding in the capital city.

Speaking at the press conference, Mayor Shifa said that the Male’ city council needs to restructure the roads as central road Majeedhee Magu had never flooded before road development.

The mayor said the current structure of the roads leads to rain water accumulating in the center of Male’, as Rasfannu beach at the western end of Majeedhee Magu and the ring road are elevated, making it difficult for water to channel out of the city.

She also said that the current sewerage system in Male’ is not fit for a large population and that they are in discussions with the planning ministry on the development plan and the concerning number of pipes on the roads.

Mayor Shifa said that they have developed a plan with the disaster management authority to solve the current issues in Male’, adding that incidents of heavy rain highlight the importance of such plans.

She praised authorities for quickly draining the flooded streets and said that they also received support from state electricity company STELCO during the power outages in some areas.
